About Tom Martinez

At 63, Tom Martinez is Still Pushing Limits—and Inspiring a Gym Full of Athletes Along the Way

While many avoid the Florida heat, Tom Martinez, 63, can often be found training in the thick of it—grinding through WODs in the afternoon sun at CrossFit Broken Chains. A fixture in the gym since 2021, Tom has become a source of inspiration for athletes of all ages and skill levels. This October, CFBC named him Athlete of the Month, not only for his consistency and effort, but for the spirit and humility he brings to every class.

Tom joined CFBC four years ago with a long-term vision in mind: to stay strong and healthy for his future grandchildren and to live a long, adventurous life alongside his wife, Myriam. “She deserves a husband who can love her, care for her, and, if needed, carry her until our very last day on earth,” he says. “I believe the Lord led me to CFBC—not just for fitness, but for something even deeper.”

More Than Just Workouts

“What keeps me coming back is the community,” he says. “This place is filled with people who represent both faith and fitness so well. I’m constantly challenged here, and I keep growing—not just physically, but spiritually.”

Tom’s favorite movement? Surprisingly, single unders —a simple jump rope movement with a story behind it.

“As a kid, I couldn’t even jump rope,” he shares. “I was chubby and lacked coordination. But now, every time I jump, I picture my childhood friends watching and cheering me on. It makes me smile and reminds me of how far I’ve come.”

His biggest challenge continues to be anything involving his knees, but Tom doesn’t let it stop him. He finds ways to adapt, persist, and improve.

Fitness with Purpose

CrossFit has shaped more than just Tom’s physical fitness. It’s sharpened his posture, mindset, and confidence—especially when speaking or leading in professional settings.

And his advice for anyone starting out?

“Just show up. Our amazing coaches will take care of the rest. Trust your body. Appreciate every ache and drop of sweat. And never forget: there is a Man who suffered so much more than these, and He did it out of love for you and me.”

To Tom, the CFBC Bond  means commitment—not just to training, but to a life of integrity and growth.

“I’m proud to be part of this gym,” he says. “And I look forward to many more workouts, challenges, and victories together.”
