Defying Age, Defining Strength: How Dodie McFarland Is Thriving at 66
April 2026 Athlete of the Month – CrossFit Broken Chains
By Coach Nate Hemphill, CCFT-L3, Owner/Head Coach, CFBC
At 66 years old, Dodie McFarland isn’t slowing down — she’s showing everyone what’s possible.
In just 10 months at CrossFit Broken Chains, Dodie has already completed 122 workouts, building strength, confidence, and a lifestyle that’s turning heads — including her doctor’s.
At a recent checkup, her physician was so impressed with her health markers that the question came naturally: “What are you doing to stay in such great shape?”
Around CFBC, the answer is simple.
She shows up.
A New Chapter Begins
Dodie joined CFBC in June 2025, encouraged by someone close to her — her partner, Coach Dennis.
“Dennis!” she says with a smile when asked what brought her through the doors.
What started as support for a partner quickly became something much bigger: a personal commitment to long-term health and independence.
Training for Life — Not Just Workouts
For Dodie, fitness isn’t about competition or comparison — it’s about quality of life.
“Knowing that I am doing my best to keep my body strong so that I am able to enjoy and participate in life in my later years,” she explains.
That perspective shows up in every class she attends. Whether it’s lifting, moving, or simply showing up on days when it would be easier not to, Dodie trains with purpose.
Stepping Outside Her Comfort Zone
One of her proudest moments so far?
Participating in the CrossFit Open.
It’s the kind of milestone that many athletes hesitate to attempt — but Dodie stepped in, embraced the challenge, and proved to herself just how capable she is.
Her favorite movement? Bench press.
Her least favorite?
“Burpees,” she admits. “I loathe them!”
And yet — she does them anyway.
Strength That Goes Beyond the Gym
Since joining CFBC, Dodie has experienced something deeper than physical progress.
“CrossFit helps me to feel strong and capable.”
It’s a simple statement, but one that carries weight — especially for someone committed to staying active, independent, and engaged in life as the years go on.
Her consistency is not just improving her fitness — it’s shaping her confidence and mindset.
A Community That Makes the Difference
Dodie is quick to point out that she’s not doing this alone.
“I love the community here at CFBC. Everyone is so very helpful.”
And at the center of that support system is someone who’s been there every step of the way.
“I have to give a huge shoutout to my favorite cheerleader, Dennis. He is so encouraging and nudges me just enough to challenge myself — although I admit I don’t always appreciate it in the moment,” she laughs.
She also credits fellow member Janann Woody for being especially welcoming and kind — another example of the culture that makes CFBC unique.
Advice for Anyone Thinking About Starting
Dodie’s message is simple, honest, and powerful:
“Just know that this community will support you. Everyone here wants to see you succeed.”
Final Words
Dodie McFarland’s journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to start — and never too late to become stronger.
At 66, she isn’t just maintaining her health — she’s redefining what aging looks like.
She’s proof that strength has no age limit…
and that the best time to start is right now.
